Its been a long time coming but finally Polar have launched their RS800 series of heart rate monitors, with the G3 version having their own accurate GPS module. Now with one watch/receiver you can monitor your horses heart rate, the altitude and speed and distance you are riding at. This combination of monitoring altitude and horse’s heart rate is particularly important in analysing the fitness of your horse and its subsequent recover rate and with the use of the Polar USB interface this information can be downloaded for analysis later. The RS800 monitor comes complete with the new Equine Wear Link transmitter W.I.N.D. which consists of a thin elasticated belt that fits around the horse with textile electrodes. A removable coded wireless transmitter clips onto this belt and transmits this information to the watch receiver which subsequently displays the data. For monitoring altitude, speed and distance the separate G3 GPS module is needed which is a stand alone device that can be mounted, via straps, onto the arm or leg. One of the main advantages of the RS800 is that the Wear Link belt can be worn all the time and unlike previous units does not have to be attached to saddle and tack making it perfect for vet holds in Endurance as heart rates can be constantly monitored even with tack removed. With this new unit, Polar, have increased the transmission range between transmitter and receiver which is now up to 15 feet or 5 metres allowing it to be used when driving horses or when lunging. Both the Transmitter and Receiver/Watch now have user changeable batteries.
